The six-storey laboratory building situated on the Novartis Campus in Basel, Switzerland, was developed on the basis of the Vittorio Lampugnani master plan for urban development. Other laboratory buildings designed, amongst others, by Frank Gehry, David Chipperfield, Adolf Krischanitz and Diener & Diener are located in the building’s immediate neighbourhood. The building’s facade construction consists of a storey-high mullion and transom facade in front of which there is a retractable stainless-steel sunscreen. Large sized, suspended pre-cast concrete elements form closed areas in the facade. An etched surface and minimal joint grid are distinguishing features of these concrete elements.
